With the success of the JEM, Steve Vai went to Ibanez to request a 7-string version of his signature guitar. The result was a variation on the JEM called the Universe, UV. In 1990 the UV became the first ever production model 7-string solid body electric guitar and over the years become an iconic instrument in its own right.
