Kevin Phillips

Piano, Cello

Kevin began teaching piano at age 18, and cello at age 21. With a strong passion for teaching music to people of all ages, Kevin love to watch students grow and learn while studying, playing, and getting to know their instruments.
Kevin performed the "Grieg Piano Concerto" at age 15 and 17, and "Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue" at 18. At 21, he performed "Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1" and a "Schubert Piano Trio" with the assistant concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Biola University.
At Biola, Kevin accompanied the women’s chorus and majored in piano and composition, also playing in the symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble.
Some of the highlights of Kevin's musical career include composing "Hymn to Peace" for the string quartet which is available to watch on Youtube. Kevin also arranged a piece of music by a Thai composer called "Queen Along Puzzle Stream" for the string orchestra and performed it with a youth orchestra.
Kevin has learned most of Bach’s "Well-Tempered Clavier" and the Bach Cello Suites, including Suite No 1, 2, 3 and 4. Kevin often rehearses with friends and family, playing baroque and classical chamber music.
Kevin prefers to teach out of the Suzuki piano and cello method for beginning and intermediate students, being involved as a teacher at the Suzuki “String Project” at Sacramento State University, having attended for almost 2 years. The Suzuki method trains the ear and body to read, memorize and perform the selected songs in the book.
Kevin can also train with Hanon scales, Christmas favorites, popular show tunes, and often theory books that are supplemented with Suzuki ear-training repertoire, while also often letting the student pick songs they may want to learn as they progress.

Kevin Phillips provides top-notch piano and cello lessons here at Gordons Music and Sound in downtown Fairfield, CA.
